By the time she was 13, she was already appearing on the Broadway stage. Milestones in her career include The Razor's Edge, which won her an Academy Award, though perhaps her most famous film roles were in All About Eve and the Ten Commandments. Her final film role was as Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes and the Masks of Death. At the age of 62, Baxter passed away from a stroke. She was married three times, widowed once (by David Klee) and divorced twice (from Randolph Galt and John Hodiak). She left behind three children: Katrina, Melissa, and Maginal.
Anne Baxter's last name, "Baxter," is an English/Scottish name referring to both the ancestral lands on the border of England and Scotland and the occupation of "bakesters" or "bakers." The first Baxter of note on record is Agnes Bakester of Yorkshire listed on the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Other spellings include "Bakster," "Baxtsair," and "Baxstare." The first known Baxter to settle in America was Gregory Baxter in Massachusetts in 1630.
